Located in German-occupied southern Poland, it took its name from the nearby town of Oświęcim, situated about 65 kilometers west of Krakow and 60km east of Katowice Airport. Following the German occupation of Poland in September 1939, Oświęcim was incorporated into Germany as part of the Katowice District, and renamed Auschwitz. The complex consisted of two main camps:
Auschwitz I - the administrative center & work camp
Auschwitz II (Birkenau) - an extermination camp
Today Auschwitz – Birkenau Camp is on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
